Observing strange shapes in the Earth’s atmosphere

NASA has observed strange forms of X and C in the Earth’s atmosphere, and researchers have been challenged to explain them.

According to the Independent, although these alphabetic shapes have been observed in the atmosphere before, NASA’s GOLD mission has shown them more clearly at times and places that researchers had not imagined.

This sudden appearance of shapes shows the researchers that other factors were probably involved in the formation of X shapes. Computer models suggest that X may have formed when changes in the Earth’s lower atmosphere lowered the amount of plasma.

“The X shape is strange because it shows that there are much more local driving factors,” says NASA researcher Jeffrey Klenzing.
